Middle School Overview

Academic Courses

Bible

6th Grade - Students visit all 66 books from Genesis to Revelation in a survey of the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.

7th Grade - The character qualities and life principles that Jesus lived and taught are used in a variety of life application activities.

8th Grade - Spiritual truths of salvation, the study of God's Word, the power of prayer, sharing Christ with the lost, daily living based on biblical principles

Language Arts

Through the study of literature, the short story, poem, play, essay, and novel are taught. Skills such as reading, writing, grammar usage, mechanics, spelling, vocabulary, critical thinking, listening, and speaking are taught.  An integrated approach provides a fullness of learning for students.

Novel studies are specifically chosen to complement grade level social studies focus.

An emphasis on grade-appropriate vocabulary is present in all grades.  Extensive study of vocabulary is completed in the 8th grade year in preparation for college-prep high schools.

Math

An advanced math track is available.  Students in 5th and 6th grade demonstrating the characteristics of an independent learner and basic competencies are eligible for consideration.

Spanish

Students in grades 4-8 are assigned an individual account through the school’s subscription to Rosetta Stone.  Students begin with Spanish and may choose another language upon successful completion of the first program of Spanish.  Rosetta Stone is a self-paced program for students and is graded with a “Satisfactory” scale.

Science

6th Grade - Earth Science

Plate tectonics and landforms, ecology, oceanography, weather, climate and the transfer of energy within earth’s systems

7th Grade - Life Science

Cellular structure and organization, heredity and genetics, taxonomy and classification, plants, animals and the human body

8th Grade - Physical Science

Properties and states of matter, motion and forces, gravity, friction, fluids and their forces, energy, work and the simple machines, atomic theory, the periodic table, types of elements, chemical reactions and equations

Social Studies

6th Grade - Ancient History

People and events that ushered in the dawn of the major Western and non-Western ancient civilizations

Mesopotamia, Egypt, Hebrews, India, China, Greece, Rome

7th Grade - Medieval times to Enlightenment

Social, cultural, and technological changes that occurred in Europe, Africa, and Asia in the years A.D. 500-1789

Modern world geography will be taught as each continent is studied

8th Grade - U.S. History

Constitution up to World War I, with an emphasis on America’s role in the war

An optional trip to Washington, D.C. occurs in March

 

Physical Education

The objective is to help students develop a heart for God, a heart for classmates, and a strong healthy heart. Students will participate in a number of different activities stressing skills development, teamwork, cooperation and fitness. Students will participate in the Presidents Council on Physical Fitness program.

Technology

Classroom subject content is partnered with the basic technology skills students will need to succeed in the competitive work world they will face as adults. Google Apps, Turnitin, email and other Internet based applications form the basis for a curriculum in which students grow as responsible and capable users of technology.
